Medical Electives OVERVIEW
This medical volunteer project is specifically aimed at medical students who need a medical student elective placement as part of a degree. However if you are not studying medicine but are interested in doing so, this can also be of great value for you. You will have the opportunity to work in one of the local clinics or hospitals alongside a qualified doctor or nurse, to observe and take part in the day to day medical activities. You will gain in-depth knowledge of how medical practices in a developing country differ from your home country. Our medical elective placement is not just a medical volunteer project but focuses on helping students reach there specific targets and requirements that their university requires. This can involve some voluntary after hours workshops and seminars, the opportunity to attend conferences and participation in research.
Medical Electives PROJECT DETAILS
You will be met at Richards Bay Airport by a Mozvolunteers representative and will be transported to our accommodation in St Lucia, which is about 40 minutes drive north. You will then have time to get settled into the novelty accommodation and catch up on some much needed rest after the long flight. That evening you will be treated to a lovely dinner. The following day you will be shown around and taken to the clinic or hospital where you will be doing your medical elective placement to meet the people you will be learning from and working with. You will also be told about the area's many attractions and activities with a quick trip to the beach to dip your toes in the Indian Ocean. The following day your elective begins.
Working days are from Monday to Friday, 8am-4pm with a one hour lunch break. However you will only be working three days a week in a clinic or hospital and the other two days will be spent doing something different: either in rural communities or mobile clinics where you will be doing research, basic health education and healthcare. Whilst in the clinic or hospital you will work closely with a qualified doctor or nurse who will assess your skills and determine the amount of practical participation you will be allowed.
