Medical Student Electives in Mozambique

All women in Mozambique wear capalanas (sarongs), so if you happen to be a female medical volunteer you will be required to wear one of these while working at the clinic. They are beautifully decorated and they look quite trendy - much more exciting than scrubs!

Medical Student Electives Mozambique

Medical Electives OVERVIEW

This medical volunteer project is specifically aimed at medical students who need a medical student elective placement as part of a degree. However if you are not studying medicine but are interested in doing so then this can also be of great value for you. You will have the opportunity to work in one of the local clinics or hospitals in the area alongside a qualified doctor or nurse, to observe and take part in the day to day medical practice. You will gain in-depth knowledge of how medical practice in a developing country differs from your home country. Our medical elective placement is not just a medical volunteer project but focuses on helping students reach their specific targets and requirements.

Medical Electives PROJECT DETAILS

You will be met at Inhambane Airport by a Mozvolunteers representative and transported to our accommodation in Zavora, which is about 1 hour and 40 minutes drive south. Alternatively you will be met at the main Zavora turn off if you have chosen to take the bus from South Africa. You will then have time to get settled into the accommodation and catch up on some much needed rest after the long flight or bus journey. That evening you will be treated to a lovely dinner and told about the following day's orientation of the area. The following day you will be shown around and taken to the clinic or hospital where you will be doing your medical elective placement to meet the people you will be learning from and working with. You will also be told about the area's many attractions and activities, with a quick trip to the beach to dip your toes in the Indian Ocean. The following day your elective begins.

Working days are from Monday to Friday, 8am-4pm with a one hour lunch break. However, you will only be working two days a week in a clinic or hospital. The other days will be spent doing house to house malaria research, health education and home based care. Work involved includes filling out patient cards, sorting out prescriptions, malaria testing, anti-natal care, general practice and much more. The amount of practical work you will do will be determined by the doctor or nurse you are working with, once they have assessed your skills and experience. Please note that one clinic in Mozambique is run by a Christian organisation: Doctors For Life. We ask all volunteers to respect their beliefs and adhere to the dress code: all woman in Mozambique wear capalanas (sarongs) so all female participants will have to wear one while on duty.
