Community Volunteering OVERVIEW
Our community project in Zavora, Mozambique focuses on helping the local community of Xisondwe. We have started a community school where we teach children of all ages English, maths, crafts and basic health education. Whilst on this project you will become part of this friendly community and learn about the Chope culture. The people are extremely friendly and welcoming, the children very eager to learn, which makes your task so much easier and more rewarding.
Community Volunteering PROJECT DETAILS
You will be met at Inhambane Airport by a Mozvolunteers representative and transported to our accommodation in Zavora, which is about 1 hour and 40 minutes drive south. Alternatively you will be met at the main Zavora turn off if you have chosen to take the bus from South Africa. You will then have time to get settled into the accommodation and catch up on some much needed rest after the long flight or bus journey. That evening you will be treated to a lovely dinner and told about the following day's orientation of the area. The following day you will be shown around and taken to our community school where you will be working, introduced to some of the locals and shown the stunning beaches just a stone's throw away. The next day the project begins and all the fun that comes with it.
Working days are from Monday to Friday, 8am-4pm with a one hour lunch break. Your tasks will involve teaching English, maths, crafts and basic health education at the community school. There are also play times where you can teach new games to the kids and they will definitely teach you some too. There is a syllabus that we follow where we can, however we are always open to any suggestions volunteers may have. On some days there is more physical work to be done which includes vegetable gardening and maintenance of playground equippment and school buildings. Once or twice a week you will get to do house to house visits doing malaria and health reasearch, this also gives you the chance to meet everybody in the surrounding area.
